COURSE DESCRIPTION
In this workshop you will learn theory and technique, with experimental exercises.
They will explain:
- The differences between shame and guilt.
- The differences between adaptive and maladaptive guilt.
- The differences between empathy and compassion and their role in therapy.
- The cycle of shame:
- (1) I am ashamed.
- (2) My proactive managers embarrass me.
- (3) My reactive firefighters distract, calm, or embarrass others.
We will practice alternatives:
- Think and talk about shame as a verb.
- Encourage protectors' willingness to try something new.
We will ask:
- Is feeling ashamed a personal benefit?
- Is feeling shame a social benefit?

Martha Sweezy is a part-time associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, a research and training consultant at the Cambridge Health Alliance's Center for Mindfulness and Compassion, and a psychotherapist with private online practice.
