COURSE DESCRIPTION

In this workshop you will learn theory and technique, with experimental exercises.

They will explain:

  • The differences between shame and guilt.
  • The differences between adaptive and maladaptive guilt.
  • The differences between empathy and compassion and their role in therapy.
  • The cycle of shame:
    • (1) I am ashamed.
    • (2) My proactive managers embarrass me.
    • (3) My reactive firefighters distract, calm, or embarrass others.

We will practice alternatives:

  • Think and talk about shame as a verb.
  • Encourage protectors' willingness to try something new.

We will ask:

  • Is feeling ashamed a personal benefit?
  • Is feeling shame a social benefit?

Martha Sweezy

Martha Sweezy is a part-time associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, a research and training consultant at the Cambridge Health Alliance's Center for Mindfulness and Compassion, and a psychotherapist with private online practice.
